Aalst, late 19th century. Progressive priest Daens fights against dangerous working conditions, child labor and poverty wages in textile factories. His struggle puts him in conflict with the upper clergy and the ruling bourgeoisie. This historical fresco, based on the novel by Louis Paul Boon, is dominated by the powerful Jan Decleir as the priest-parliamentarian and founder of the Christian People's Party. The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
