Life down and around the mine was portrayed in many different ways in the previous century. Films were often intended to make the mining industry look attractive or to recruit Belgian or foreign workers and were frequently made in response to current events, such as in the case of the mining disaster at Marcinelle in 1957, or in the event of strikes and the numerous closures. The mine also inspired film-makers to make fiction and melodrama. In 1911 Victorin H. Jasset made the silent film The Great Mine Disaster. Together with broadcasting companies' archives and the main mining heritage organisations CINEMATEK selected 14 films that bring coal mining in Belgium during the previous century to life once again.
