The Conscript (Roland Verhavert, 1974)

The success of Mira in 1971 inspired producer Jan Van Raemdonck to try and repeat this formula. Hendrik Conscience' s novella The Conscript was written in 1850 and tells the story of farmer Jan Braems and his girlfriend Katrien, when he gets conscripted for military service. The precarious living conditions at the barracks make Jan blind but Katrien will come to his rescue. Nic Bal, production manager of the national broadcasting company, assistant director Roland Verhavert in adapting the novella. In his hands, the original naïve story, where every ordeal is rewarded, turns into a dark and detached drama ruled by fate.
