One of the major neglected European films of the sixties
Kevin Thomas (Los Angeles Times 07.02.1973)
André Delvaux's debut film and a classic Flemish magic realistic film. The screenplay is an adaptation of the novel by author Johan Daisne. The leading character is lawyer Govert Miereveld, who teaches at a girls' school in a provincial town. He is secretly in love, in a platonic way, with his pupil Fran. This results in him plunging into a downwards spiral of mental desperation.
